Perspective:
Your mind is a brilliant problem-solving machine—but sometimes it gets stuck in a loop, trying to solve problems that don’t even exist.
Mindset Minute: How to Avoid Overthinking with a Simple 3-Step Process
Overthinking is mental quicksand. The more you struggle with it, the deeper you sink.
It disguises itself as “being careful” or “analyzing every angle,” but in reality, it’s just a high-effort way to stand still.
What if the way to escape wasn’t to think harder but to think differently?
Here’s a three-step process that interrupts overthinking at its source and shifts your brain into action mode.
1. The 90-Second Rule: Label It and Let It Go
Unless you consciously redirect, your brain will obsess over a thought for about 90 seconds.
Next time you catch yourself spiralling, say:
"This is overthinking. It’s not problem-solving. I’ll decide in 90 seconds."
Set a timer and move. Stand up, get a drink of water, or stretch.
By the time the timer ends, your brain has already shifted gears.
2. The ‘Worst, Best, Likely’ Trick
Most overthinking stems from fear of making the wrong decision.
Instead of looping endlessly, ask yourself three questions:
What’s the worst that could happen?
What’s the best that could happen?
What’s the most likely outcome?
99% of the time, the worst-case scenario isn’t as catastrophic as your mind makes it out to be.
This trick forces your brain to see reality instead of running wild with “what-ifs.”
3. The ‘Action Precedes Clarity’ Rule
Overthinking is often a sign you’re waiting for the perfect solution before moving forward.
But clarity isn’t a prerequisite for action—it’s a byproduct of it.
Commit to one imperfect next step.
Not the whole plan. Not the perfect move. Just one small action. Your brain will follow your body’s lead.
